In March 2022, The Roys Report published results of an investigation into GCC’s counseling approach. Two decades ago, the outlet stated, GCC “excommunicated and shamed Eileen Gray for refusing to take back her child-abusing husband, David Gray,” who was eventually convinced of child molestation and abuse. The woman, now known as Eileen Taylor, described how Shannon and other GCC counselors tried to force her to reconcile with her husband and said reporting him to police was sinful.
In April 2022, The Roys Report wrote about John Street, a GCC elder who directs the graduate program of biblical counseling at MacArthur’s The Master’s University and Seminary. In a lecture series, Street said that “personal protection and escape” shouldn’t be the “essential object” of a counselor’s advice. A Christian wife who’s facing abuse by an unbelieving husband, he added, should endure persecution just as a foreign missionary faces risk of bodily harm.
