Kat Von D was born in Mexico in the city of Montemorelos to missionary parents. She was raised as a Christian, but “ended up straying.”
“I had a lot of questions as a kid,” she said, “and I don’t think my parents were equipped with the answers.” Throughout the interview, Von D voiced her belief in the importance of questioning and finding answers about faith. When her own son eventually asks her questions about Christianity, Von D does not want to tell him, “We just believe.”
Von D ran away from home when she was 14 and started getting tattoos at the time. She was later sent to a remedial institution for six months, an experience she described as negative. Around the age of 16 or 17, Von D started drinking to cope with the challenges in her life. She had started tattooing at that point and, being a born artist and skilled at the profession, she saw tattooing as a calling. By the time she was cast in “Miami Ink” in her early 20s, she was doing drugs and was a “full-blown alcoholic” with a “growing addiction.”
It was in her 20s that Von D started exploring the New Age and practicing transcendental meditation. “I wasn’t really actively pursuing any belief system,” she said. “I just was sad.”
Finding Christianity
Kat Von D became a Christian about a year before the 2022 Instagram post where she revealed that she was throwing away some of her books. The artist took issue with how the media portrayed that decision, saying that outlets focused on the fact she had books on the occult and witchcraft.
However, Von D has never been a witch or a Satanist, and she also threw away books on meditation and yoga, as well as some art books that she did not want her son to see. Her goal was to eliminate distractions from her life. “I don’t want these crutches in my life any more,” she said. “I just want Jesus.”
The artist said that she witnessed an explicitly demonic reaction to her announcement that she was getting rid of those items. In the comments on that post, she said, “I feel like you could see literal demons hissing at each other.” Also, at least two people came to her house looking for the books, including one whom Von D believes was possessed.

Kat Von D credited her husband, Rafael Reyes, for being instrumental in her conversion to Christianity. When the COVID-19 lockdowns occurred, he said to her one day that he believed they had gotten a lot of their political beliefs wrong. So Von D began to re-evaluate her politics, a process that led to her examining her spiritual beliefs. Around that time, a friend sent her a sermon by Pastor Jack Hibbs. “I loved it,” said Von D. “It really spoke to me, and it answered a lot of questions that I had.”
