Von D and her husband started watching church every Sunday, and Von D said that she started wanting “more and more and more, and so I just started studying the Bible.”
“I’ve been sober for a long time,” Von D told Stuckey, “but I don’t feel like I was free from all of it until I found God.”
Von D addressed Christians’ criticisms of her attire and her music, saying that she is not going to change herself to please people who expect her to present herself a certain way outwardly. Regarding cruel comments she received from Christians in response to her baptism, she said, “I think that the amount of critical Christians on my Instagram now [has] become such a turnoff to people who are actually seeking God that I had to just block and delete.”
What some people said about Reyes has been particularly hurtful. Neither Von D nor her husband were Christians when they got married, yet he unwittingly helped her “find her way.”
“He’s very supportive,” Von D said. She and Reyes go to church every Sunday and pray together, but he is still questioning and is “not necessarily on the same page” with her on everything. After Reyes saw Christians criticize him on social media, he said to Von D, “Babe, I don’t want to be a part of that.”
For years, Von D has tried to be a good example to Reyes so he can trust in Jesus. “That hasn’t happened yet,” she said. “But when you have an entire community of people attacking you…it turns people off.”

Finding a Church
Thankfully, the church that Kat Von D and her family found in Indiana is not like that at all but in fact “is amazing.” Von D said that after moving to Indiana, finding a church was her top priority. She wanted a traditional service, not one that felt like a rock concert, and she wanted to learn more about the Bible, not simply to hear feel-good stories.
“I feel like God just spit me out on the doorsteps of the most perfect church for us,” she told Stuckey. The congregation is small and full of older people, and the church accepted Von D and her family immediately, saying they had been praying for them after the family moved to the neighborhood.
During the interview, Von D also touched on her friendship with shock rocker Marilyn Manson, whom she met through her pursuit of sobriety. “I believe that all people have the ability to change,” Von D said, noting that she is friends with people who are drug addicts and prostitutes.
