After failing to convince Saunders of Garrison’s right to be buried in the church’s cemetery privately, the family launched a change.org petition to rally support.

“For 82 years Sallie faithfully attended the same church, First Baptist Church of Hollins in Roanoke, VA. Sallie was a devoted member of her church, she formed and directed church choirs,” the petition said. “She was, some would say, the backbone of the musical department- she led the choir as a soloist for many years of her dedicated attendance.”
“We firmly believe that it is an injustice and a gross act of discrimination that a religious institution has denied its member the right of burial,” the petition added. “Her entire family that preceded her in death is buried in the cemetery. Only five months ago her beloved sister was buried there.”
The petition received 14,778 signatures.
Eventually, Saunders and FBCH relented and allowed Garrison to be buried in the church’s cemetery. She was laid to rest on Friday, Nov. 10.
Garrison’s granddaughter, Alycia Garrison, announced Garrison’s burial in a Facebook post.
“We, the Garrison family cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of love and support that you have shown our family, from all corners of the earth,” Alycia wrote. “Please accept our heartfelt gratitude. Blessings to you all.”
Garrison’s daughter, Kathy Garrison, likewise expressed gratitude in a Facebook post.
