Alleged Murderer Turns Himself in After Talking to Pastor, Spending the Night at Church

Ortiz-Vite attended the church’s Palm Sunday service the next morning where, Tucker said, “We treated him as a visitor at our church, the way God would want us to do it.”

She said that the murder suspect sat behind a woman wearing a shirt with the following text printed on the back: “You’re worthwhile, God loves you, somebody does love you.”

In the middle of the church service, Ortiz-Vite went to the bathroom, called 911, and turned himself in to police, revealing that he had a gun. Just before the service ended, Tucker said that a church member stood up and announced that everyone needed to stay in the church because the police had arrived and were arresting the murder suspect.

The pastor expressed anger that presidential candidate Donald Trump referenced Garcia’s alleged murder by an “illegal alien” Tuesday in remarks he gave in Grand Rapids. “Now, Ruby’s loved ones and community are left grieving for this incredible young woman,” he said. “They said she had the most contagious laughter and when she walked into a room, she lit up that room. I’ve heard that from so many people. I spoke to some of her family.”

“It’s not political. It has nothing to do with politics. It’s just two people that got into an argument,” said Tucker, “and it went farther than it should have. That’s what happened. and there’s no sense in making it political because it doesn’t help the Garcia family, and it doesn’t help [Ortiz-Vite] and his family.”

Mavi Garcia, Ruby’s sister, has said that no one in the Trump campaign contacted her family. She was “shocked” to hear Trump say he had and was angered at her sister’s death being used for political leverage.

Ortiz-Vite was arraigned Tuesday, March 26. He is being held without bond on charges of “felony murder, open murder, carjacking, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearm.” His next court appearance is scheduled for April 9.

An obituary for Ruby Garcia says, “She cared so deeply for the people around her- so kind and passionate. She’s made an impact on many lives. She will be forever missed.”
