For that event, the cast was joined by 600 extras, singing and waving palm branches. Xanthis said it reminded him of celebrating Easter in his youth in the Greek Orthodox church, an experience he described as “magical.” He said, “It took me back to…that cultural heritage that I have.”
Filming the triumphal entry “was one of the greatest moments of my life and career just because it looked so visceral,” said Jenkins. “All 12 hours of filming, we’d still be doing the last take and [people] were still excited and crying.” He himself was “very emotional…It was beautiful, just the privilege that we get to recreate something that happened so long ago but yet has relevance today.”
Joel and Luke Smallbone joined Jenkins for the latter part of the livestream, where they talked about their connection to Jenkins and “The Chosen” and their movie, “Unsung Hero,” which officially releases on April 26. The film, named after for KING + COUNTRY’s song of the same name, tells the story of how the duo’s parents, David and Helen Smallbone, emigrated their family of nine from Sydney, Australia, to Nashville, Tennessee, following the demise of David’s music company.
At the end of the livestream, Jenkins shared “some really devastating, devastating news” relating to the Chosen family. Micah Elfrink, a woman with professional and personal connections to the show and to Jenkins, whom he described as “a deep, deep member of the Chosen family” had passed away in a car accident.
“She was beloved…you could never find a bad word to be heard about Micah Elfrink,” Jenkins said. “She was very dear to all of us.”
“Pray for the family, and pray for our team. It’s just really a devastating loss, and it’s a reminder of how precious life is,” said Jenkins with emotion. “She loved the man that we are portraying [Jesus], and she is with him now.”
He observed that the aim of “The Chosen” is to portray that “God is sovereign, and…the love that God the Father and God the Son have for you is immense, both here and in eternity.”
