Since her death, Mica Miller’s family and friends have insisted there is more to the situation and have urged investigators to dig deep, suggesting that her husband, John-Paul, was abusive and used her mental health to control her.
Mica’s sister, Sierra, stated in an affidavit that “Mica stated to me on many occasions, ‘If I end up with a bullet in my head, it was not by me, it was JP [John-Paul].”
On the day of Mica’s memorial service, protestors gathered outside Solid Rock at Market Common church holding signs and shouting, “Justice for Mica.”
The sheriff’s detailed statement provided specifics of Mica’s whereabouts on the day she died, including that she drove to a pawn shop to purchase a handgun and called 911 to inform responders that “she was going to kill herself.”
“On Saturday, April 27, 2024, at approximately 2:54 pm, Robeson County E911 Communications Center received a 911 call from a female,” the sheriff’s office said. “The caller asked the dispatcher if her phone could be located because she was going to kill herself and wanted her family to be able to find her body.”
“During the conversation with the dispatcher,” officials added, “the caller hung up the phone and the dispatcher was unable to contact the caller. The dispatcher was able to find the location of the caller and dispatched a Deputy to the location.”
“I’m about to kill myself and I just want my family to know where to find me,” Miller told the dispatcher.
Inside Miller’s black Honda Accord, investigators located a case for a Sig Sauer 9mm handgun and a receipt that provided evidence that it was purchased the same day as her death.
While looking for Miller, investigators were approached by a fisherman who informed them that he had found a bag near the water and had heard a woman crying and then a gunshot.
Following a 911 call from someone who had found a body in the water, investigators were able to locate and identify Miller’s deceased body and retrieve the Sig Sauer 9mm handgun she had recently purchased.
According to the statement, Miller’s phone revealed that she had been searching for parks near her location, and Lumber River State Park came up.
