Harrison Butker Slams Biden and Taylor Swift During Controversial Commencement Address at Benedictine College

Harrison Butker Addresses the ‘Vocation’ of Women—Indirectly Calling Out Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift fans noticed that early on in Butker’s speech, he directly quotes one of Taylor Swift’s songs, “Bejeweled.” He was admonishing members of the Catholic Church’s leadership who “let their guard down and became overly familiar,” which proves “problematic.”

“As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt,'” he said, not naming Swift. Then, about halfway through his speech, Butker addressed the graduating women in the ceremony, whom he said have “had diabolical lies” told to them.

“Many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career,” Butker said. “But, I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Butker then shared his appreciation for his wife, Isabelle, who is a “homemaker.” “I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabel would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” Butker said. “I’m on this stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I am beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me. But it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because the girl I met in being class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

“Isabelle’s dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you ask her today if she has any regrets on her decision—she would laugh out loud,” Butker said.

Numerous social media users across platforms reacted quickly and angrily against what they called Butker’s “misogynistic” speech. Swifties in particular took issue with Butker quoting Swift’s lyrics while referring to her only as his teammate’s “girlfriend.” They also decried his message to the high-achieving women present while quoting the 34-year-old unmarried Swift, who has recently achieved billionaire status and has sold 200 million albums globally.

One X (formerly Twitter) user posted: “One of the worst parts of this NFL player’s awful speech is that he quoted a Taylor Swift song before telling women they should be homemakers and serve their man’s career.”
