The Encouragement of Ukrainian Christians

When I asked Ukrainian Christian leaders what they would want American Christians to know and to do, they consistently pleaded with me: “Tell Americans to stop believing Russian propaganda about the war.” The nation and government of Ukraine are not perfect, but the Russian campaign led by Vladimir Putin is evil. This is a savage and unjust war, and Russian aggression is “the bad guy.” In Ukrainian territory now occupied by Russian forces, religious freedom has ended. Evangelical pastors are being killed and churches are being closed.

The nation and government of Ukraine are not perfect, but the Russian campaign led by Vladimir Putin is evil.

Christians must be discipled by the Word of God in the community of the church rather than by cable news and social media feeds. As Christians we are part of the body of Christ with our brothers and sisters across the world. We must love our brothers and sisters in Ukraine enough to learn the real story, rather than believing the lies that find their way into our media consumption.

Ukrainian Christians live in a consistent state of uncertainty. Any man under age 60 can be drafted or “conscripted” for military service at any moment. Sirens signal danger. Yet these faithful, resilient believers keep going, for the sake of the gospel. Let’s pray that through these many dangers, toils, and snares, God’s grace would lead them into peace.
