As a founding member of the Confessing Church, Bonhoeffer staunchly opposed the rise of Hitler’s Third Reich. He played a key role in underground seminaries that operated in Germany during the 1930s.
During World War II, Bonhoeffer was accused of participating in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The end of the movie trailer shows the pastor in a concentration camp—plus a glimpse of a noose. “I am ready…to meet my destiny,” Bonhoeffer’s character says.
The 39-year-old theologian was hanged with other co-conspirators on April 9, 1945, just weeks before Hitler killed himself. Bonhoeffer’s last words were, “This is the end—for me, the beginning of life.”
