Addressing the media at a press conference on Sunday (July 14), Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro shared that he had just finished speaking with Comperatore’s wife and daughters.

“Corey was a girl dad. Corey was a firefighter. Corey went to church every Sunday. Corey loved his community, and most especially Corey loved his family,” the governor said.

He added that “Corey was an avid supporter of the former president and was so excited to be there last night with him in the community.”

With Comperatore’s wife’s permission, Shapiro shared that she told him that “Corey died a hero. Corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally. Corey was the very best of us. May his memory be a blessing.”

A friend of the Comperatores has organized a GoFundMe to help the family in their loss. The fundraiser had a goal of $7,000—in less than 48 hours it has raised over $986,000.

Trump has additionally authorized a GoFundMe for “the supporters and families wounded or killed” in the “brutal and horrific assassination attempt.” According to GoFundMe, “All donations will be directed to these proud Americans as they grieve and recover.”

The fundraiser’s goal was set for $1 million, but has raised over $4.2 million dollars and includes donations from UFC President Dana White, Kid Rock, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Ben Shapiro.
