Texas Church Offers Free Urgent Care to Those Without Insurance, IDs

Highland Baptist Church hopes to expand the clinic’s hours in the future. 

“Our church strongly believes that we are called to gather together as believers in worship, prayer and Scripture and that should lead us to grow in our faith by becoming maturing disciples who make disciples,” San Martin told ChurchLeaders. “But it does not stop there, our church knows that they are called to go and serve either locally or internationally.

“These goals have allowed for our church body to be very receptive in responding to volunteer needs for our urgent care,” he added. “This also helps set an example to new believers that all three components are equally important in the church.”

The urgent care clinic is one of several programs offered by Highland Baptist Church through its Wellness Center. The center also offers courses in financial literacy, citizenship classes, and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, birthing classes, as well as other community initiatives to address housing needs and facilitate foster care and adoption.

“We also believe that all churches should be doing something in their community that allows them to serve to the best gifts and abilities that each church body has,” San Martin told ChurchLeaders. “That what we do in our community is not for expected growth in church membership or to bring ‘salvation’ to a specific people group but to do it just to serve and love in the same way Jesus does for us.”
