Mutombo emphasized that people can make an impact in the world without having lots of money. “Ten dollars provides malaria treatment for a child,” he said. “Instead of paying $4 for a cup of coffee, donate it to a worthy nonprofit. Give whatever you can, and always help people in need. You don’t have to be rich to make a difference.”

When Mutombo visited Jerusalem in 2018 to dedicate a new sports center, he was moved to tears. “My parents might be gone, but they instilled in me the dream of coming here,” he said of the Holy Land. “And I’ve made it.”
