Jenkins said, “Yes, on the surface, this is a mainstream Christmas classic story for the whole family, but not that far beneath the surface, it is a Jesus story.”

The film is a “love letter to those who volunteer, to those who are serving children, and to those who are serving their church,” Jenkins explained, “and trying to get their church to understand that some of the people who walk into our doors, not only are we able to serve them even if they have outsider status, but sometimes they have something to say to us.”

“Sometimes, they can cause us to see things from a different perspective that we need to hear and see,” he added. That is why, Jenkins said, he has been trying to make this movie for 20 years.

“God’s timing is perfect, of course,” he added, citing that “The Chosen” has allowed him to become a better filmmaker than he would have been even a few years ago. “I’m finally able to deliver this beautiful, beautiful story, this Jesus story, this church story to the world in the form of a mainstream family movie for the whole country that has the potential to become, hopefully, a Christmas classic for everybody,” he said.

Jenkins hopes the film will remind Christians about what it “looks like to truly love others and truly to welcome others to the table,” including those we “maybe judge instinctively” because they are “different from us.”

“One of the biggest takeaways for everyone is to remember,” Jenkins said, “unto you, a child is born.”
