Another online commenter told Crawford, “Stick to the Scriptures. Saw the sermon (sic). It wasn’t good. Hopefully your elders sit you down and explain how your job is to preach the Word, not get political. Unreal lack of wisdom.”

That more membership didn’t get up and walk out is the real eye opener and indicates just how far the SBC has fallen from understanding the biblical imperatives involved. The sin of empathy is very pronounced in his sermon and Pastor Crawford seems to have a lot in common with Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde.

Crawford did have supporters online, with one person writing, “Thank you to Dr. Crawford for your kindness and your wise words about immigration.”
Mauricio Calvo, CEO of Latino Memphis, said the city’s Latino residents are concerned and confused. His organization recently launched an effort to prepare immigrants for possible raids and to help them know their rights.
According to Calvo, Latinos make up 10% of the Memphis population and 12% of students at local public schools. Other immigrant groups also have been growing in the area. From 2010 to 2020, Calvo said, the Asian population in Memphis rose by 34%. Recently, the largest influx has been from Venezuela and Guatemala.
