FAA Certifies Missionary's Flying Car

10/26/10

CNN’s BeliefBlog reported this morning on a flying car, developed by missionary Steve Saint, which recently received a special airworthiness certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, the first of its type. Saint is the son of Nate Saint, the missionary who was killed while attempting to make contact with the Waodani Indians in Ecuador, a story made famous in the film End of the Spear. Spending his childhood with the tribe that killed his father, Saint eventually left to attend college and later developed a non-profit organization with the vision of “reinventing” technology so indigenous peoples need not depend on outside influences or aid to survive. The flying car, dubbed the Maverick, was designed to allow off-road travel through difficult terrain. With its Subaru engine and chromoly-steel and canvas frame, the car is tough yet light, garnering a “Breakthrough Award” in 2009 from Popular Mechanics magazine. Saint plans to offer the car for about $80,000 and manufacture about 100 per year.
