Can Jesus & Darwin Co-Exist?

01/11/11

“Science-rejecting creationism and faith-rejecting atheism are not the only games in town,” comments Michael Dowd, author of the best-selling book Thank God for Evolution and host of a new series of webinars discussing what he terms “evolutionary evangelism,” i.e., how evolution can deepen rather than deny faith. As reported in the Associated Baptist Press, Dowd insists that the ancient biblical writers did not take into account modern scientific theory and analogies, and today’s science only serves to further communicate God’s message to the world rather than challenge it. Dowd says, “Tens of millions of people…see no conflict between faith and reason, heart and head, Jesus and Darwin,” and that science now presents a reality “far more majestic and awe-inspiring than the biblical writers could have possibly imagined.”

The 38 panel members will include professor Ken Miller, co-author of the most widely used biology textbook in America, Karl Giberson, vice president of the conservative BioLogos Foundation promoting the integration of faith and science, and Brian McLaren, named by Time magazine as one of the nation’s most influential evangelicals. The series, titled “The Advent of Evolutionary Christianity: Conversations on the Leading Edge of Faith,” will begin on January 15.
