Chan Helps Plant Churches in San Francisco Apartments

The Charisma News featured a story about a ministry to a San Francisco neighborhood working to provide food, school and medical supplies, prayer, and discipleship to its residents. Participating with this ministry is Francis Chan, author of the best-selling Crazy Love and former pastor at Cornerstone Community Church, who says the ministry’s ultimate goal is to plant a church within each apartment building in the area.

The ministry, San Francisco City Impact, has targeted the Tenderloin district of San Francisco where 37,000 people live within one square mile. Calling their initiative “Adopt a Building,” workers in the ministry choose a building and begin to pray for the residents. Then they approach the residents and ask if they can fill needs for food, medical supplies, school supplies, and prayer, which they provide the following week. Discipleship opportunities are then offered to those with interest; Chan is working on a curriculum to that end.

“Our ultimate goal is that we would train some of these people and teach these people so well that eventually there would be a leader in that building who would gather the other believers together and even be the pastor of that apartment building,” Chan explained.

The mission of San Francisco City Impact is to “holistically heal and transform” the San Francisco community through relief such as providing food, clothing, and housing, and preventative works such as counseling, training and discipleship.
