The Power of Sharing Often

Earlier this week I was reading the accounts of the early church in the book of Acts. I was so taken by the unprecedented generosity of this community that is highlighted often. Here’s a great example:

All the believers were united in heart and mind. And they felt that what they owned was not their own, so they shared everything they had. The apostles testified powerfully to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and God’s great blessing was upon them all. There were no needy people among them, because those who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the money to the apostles to give to those in need.

For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.Acts 4:32-36

One of the reasons this church, this community,  had such an amazing impact on the world is because of the way they shared their stuff with such amazing generosity.

So here’s the question I want us all to ask today.

What Can I Share?

Maybe, you just pray and ask God, “God what is one thing you want me to share today?”

Maybe you let someone  borrow a car. If you have a car, let somebody borrow your car and simply think, “How lucky I am to have a car.”

Maybe you have some extra room in your house and you let someone who’s having a hard time move in for a few weeks or months.

Maybe you notice after you’ve prepared a meal that you have quite a bit left over so you wrap it up and take it to someone at work the next morning and think, “How blessed am I that I have more food than I can actually eat.”

Maybe you share your time and you let someone skip you in line this week.

Being  a part of Cross Point Church allows me to be a part of a community that is regularly inspiring me in this area. In just the past two weeks I’ve been on the front row to watch some unprecedented generosity in action.

A couple weeks ago someone showed up at our Dickson campus and donated a car to another family.

Our Franklin campus pulled together supplies for a family in their community who lost their home in a horrible house fire.

There was a single mom in our church who just had a baby and no place to stay. The need was tweeted and almost immediately a home was volunteered to her.

There was a family who just experienced a horrific tragedy when their 16 day old baby died. In the midst of their own pain they called the church office to say they wanted to do something for someone else during this time and they sponsored a couple teenagers to go to our church camp this summer.

So how about you? Are you willing to hold your stuff with an open hand today? Are you willing to ask God if there’s something you can share today?
