Study Probes Americans' Knowledge of Religion

According to a new survey of religious knowledge conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, atheists and agnostics score highest in their knowledge of world religions—as many as four points higher than the national average. Americans correctly answered an average of 16 out of 32 questions relating to knowledge of world religions; atheists and agnostics scored an average of 20.9 questions correctly. Jews and Mormons also scored higher than average (20.5 and 20.3, respectively). White evangelical Protestants scored a little better than average (17.6 correct answers), and Catholics as a whole averaged 14.7 correct answers. Mormons and white evangelical Protestants showed the highest level of knowledge of Christianity, and atheists/agnostics and Jews scored well on questions relating to religion in public life.
