Could You Pray for a Terrorist?

02/25/11

The CNN Belief Blog told the story of an online movement asking Americans to pray for suicide bombers, assassins, and other terrorists—in fact, the movement is urging people to “adopt” them for regular prayer. The organization, Adopt a Terrorist For Prayer, says the struggle against terrorism is primarily a spiritual one, therefore requiring spiritual weapons to combat it. The site offers more than 160 terrorists for whom users may pledge their prayer efforts; most of those listed are FBI or State Department-recognized terrorists or terrorist sponsors. Interestingly, Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has been adopted by 13 people. A spokesperson for the movement says the point of the website is to get people to pray for their enemies (Matthew 5:44) and to bring a spiritual perspective to the struggle against terrorism. The list of terrorists can be reviewed at ATFP.org.
