Smithsonian to Restore Jefferson Bible

The Smithsonian Institute will take $225,000 to restore the Jefferson Bible, an iconic collection created by Thomas Jefferson in 1820 of passages cut from the pages of the Bible. According to The Washington Post, most of the pages show some damage; a group of curators will examine the pages to stabilize their condition and study the choices of passages Jefferson made based on his personal spiritual and moral values. Harry Rubenstein, museum chair, said of the artifact, “This is a private document he created for himself. He never sold it because he didn’t want it to be public. He wanted to avoid bringing back the arguments that he was anti-Christian.” The 86-page book will also be digitally scanned, and a website will be launched from it.
