Pope Sends First Tweet

June 30, 2011

Pope Benedict XVI sent his first message via Twitter yesterday announcing the Vatican’s new website. The tweet read, “Dear Friends, I just launched News.va Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.” The release of the new website was timed with the Vatican’s celebration of the 60th anniversary of Benedict’s ordination. The website shows a photo of Benedict sending the tweet on a tablet at his desk, although the actual text of the tweet was prepared for him. CNN’s BeliefBlog says the Pope already has more than a billion followers, adding more than 22,000 after the tweet went out yesterday.
