Baseball Star Helps Bring NY Church to Life

July 1, 2011

Star Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is pitching in with his home church to adopt and restore a 1900s-era building in New Rochelle. According to a Huffington Post report, Rivera said he “fell in love with the building the moment he saw it” and will assist with repairs so his Spanish-speaking church can move in. Mayor Noah Bramson during a press conference on Tuesday said the cost of repairs will top $3 million, but the church will restore the building and purchase it for $1. Rivera also remarked on his love for the youth of the area and of his hope that the new facility would help revive the church’s ministry to young people. Rivera has an ERA of 1.72 so far this season with the Yankees and a 2.22 career ERA.
