Bankruptcy Looms for Las Vegas Megachurch

July 15, 2011

The Christian Post reported yesterday that another megachurch has filed for bankruptcy protection; this time it’s the Church at South Las Vegas, pastored by Benny Perez. According to the article, members of the church voted to stop paying the mortgage when they found out the building was only worth a third of what they owed on it. Perez said the leadership and the congregation “didn’t want their donations to keep going down a black hole with no light at the end of the tunnel.” Church attorneys attempted to negotiate the principal to a managable level, but to no avail. Bankruptcy protection was filed at the end of last week. The Church at South Las Vegas is especially known for its ministry to prostitutes and currently provides help for the hungry and for cash-strapped local schools, but Perez warned that if the church is forced into foreclosure, it will severely effect the church’s ability to minister to the community. CP said Las Vegas currently has the most home foreclosures and bankruptcies in the country.
