Adopt a Dead Sea Scroll Page for $2K

August 3, 2011

According to a story in The Christian Post, the Friends of Israel Antiquities Authority are providing fans of the Dead Sea Scrolls the opportunity to “adopt” pages of them in order to raise money for conservation and digitization efforts. For $2,000, one may adopt a medium-sized fragment of the Scrolls and receive a plaque inscribed with their name displayed wherever the texts are shown. Jacob Fische, a representative of the FIAA, says his organization will “work with people’s budgets to find them something…people love the idea of adopting a chapter from Leviticus or Deuteronomy.”

There are more than 15,000 Dead Sea Scroll fragments and, as the CP article indicated, are the basis of hundreds of books and theories about early Christianity and the life of Christ. The conservation and digitization project is expected to take a total of about five years, but portions of the Scrolls should be available online in a few months.
