ABC News Focuses on Near-Death Experiences

August 4, 2011

Correspondent Bob Woodruff hosted several people last night on ABC’s Primetime Nightline: Beyond Belief in a special report titled “The Other Side,” an exploration of reports from those who claim to have seen and experienced heaven after a near-death injury or illness. Woodruff himself had a near-death experience in Iraq after a severe injury from an IED explosion; he says he could see his body below him as he rose up into a white light.

Stories from others with near-death experiences were similar in his special report, including an interview with 12-year-old Colton Burpo, the subject of the recent best-seller Heaven is for Real, and pastor Don Piper of Pasadena, whose near-death experience was recounted in the book, 90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life. Woodruff also interviewed scientists, researchers, and physicians about the history and background of near-death experiences and whether or not such experiences are truly a sight of heaven or if they can be explained by medical, psychological, and/or anthropological means.
