MacArthur: Don't Drink & Minister

John MacArthur wrote a strongly worded article this week on his website denouncing the use of alcohol within the context of evangelism and other ministry work. The Christian Post quotes MacArthur as saying the recreational use of alcohol is “seductive and oppressive” and “it is puerile and irresponsible” for any pastor to encourage it. MacArthur, a prolific author and the lead pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, Calif., specifically referred to young ministers claiming that good theological discussion takes place over a drink in a pub or bar; but MacArthur wrote, at the risk of being called “legalistic,” that the church should not be known for such activities. “It is wrong-headed, carnal, and immature to imagine that bad-boy behavior makes good missional strategy.” MacArthur’s director of Internet ministry, Travis Allen, explained that MacArthur never did offer “candy-coated messages in pretty packages” and said “church leaders must consider the consequences of what they approve and promote.”
