Rick Warren Clarifies His Stance on Muslims, Evangelism, and Missions

An Orange County secular newspaper misquoted Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif., as saying Christians and Muslims worship the same God, setting off a firestorm of blog posts and online commentary that Warren endorses a mix of Christianity and Islam.

In an attempt to clarify what was said, Ed Stetzer, prominent Christian blogger and author and executive of LifeWay Research, emailed Warren and asked him about it directly. Warren answered Stetzer by sharing a recent interview meant to clarify some of the most pressing questions about the misquotation in the OC Register.

In the interview Warren affirms the fundamental distinction between the god of Islam and the God of Christianity and explained that only Christians believe in the doctrine of the Trinity: one God in three persons. He also said the reporter of the newspaper article incorrectly attributed to Warren a “partnership” between his church and a mosque. Warren admits to a friendship between his congregation and a group of Muslims, but there’s no effort at a compromised religion happening.
