Roe v. Wade Would Remain Intact Under Romney, Says Top Campaign Adviser

According to The Christian Post, a former senator and Gov. Mitt Romney surrogate told voters in Ohio on Monday that he doubts Roe v. Wade would be overturned during a Romney presidency. Former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.) told a group of mostly Jewish listeners, “The reality is that choice is an issue for a lot of people, a very important issue. President Bush was president eight years; Roe v. Wade wasn’t reversed. He had two Supreme Court picks; Roe v. Wade wasn’t reversed. It’s not going to be reversed.”

Romney suggested during the GOP primary that he would cut funds to Planned Parenthood and appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court. However, during recent interviews, Romney has said that the U.S. is not prepared to deal with a constitutional ban on abortion, but that Roe v. Wade should be overturned so the states can make their own abortion laws.

Romney told the Columbus Dispatch, “It is my preference that would return to the states and to the people and their elected representatives the issue of abortion as opposed to having the federal government impose, the Supreme Court impose, its view on a one-vote majority,”

The Huffington Post has since reported that Coleman has denied that he was speaking on Romney’s behalf. He commented that Republicans would prefer to address issues like partial birth abortion and parental notification rather than take on the longstanding precedent of Roe v. Wade.
