Teen Sentenced to 10 Years Church Attendance

According to KSL.com, an Oklahoma judge has sentenced a teen to 10 years of church attendance in response to a conviction of DUI manslaughter. Admitting that the sentence would probably never hold up in court, Judge Mike Norman sentenced the teen, Tyler Alred, 17, after Alred crashed and killed a passenger in his pickup truck in December 2011. Judge Norman also ordered Alred to finish high school and welding school, saying the sentence was “the right thing to do.”

Alred’s attorney and family agreed to the sentence, but the ACLU called the action by the judge “a clear violation of the First Amendment” and is currently reviewing their options.
