Finish Well: How to Leave a Church the Right Way

People can easily read into your words an insult you didn’t mean. (And if you did mean it—repent.)

Ephesians 4:29: Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Communicate to your leaders appropriately

I know there are many facets to this one, with many valid points.

I will just say in the situation with John Mark, I appreciated him bringing me in on the situation a few months ago when things with Apex got serious.

This allowed me to give him some guidance and also helped us prepare his ministry for transition if God called him away.

Work hard till the end

During the few weeks of transition, don’t just coast.

Do all you can to help your current church go great after you’re gone. There will be plenty of time at your new place to get it going.

Finish well.

Spend time saying goodbye (but not too much)

Usually a couple of weeks is good when a pastor/staff member leaves.

This allows an appropriate, public goodbye (reception, etc.), as well as some personal goodbyes with people with whom you were closer.
