Changing Gears: From Fasting to Feasting

Now, individually and corporately, we need to rediscover the Kingdom message. Our task as leaders is to lead people into the fullness of God’s Kingdom. The angels who were present at the ascension asked a pretty good question: “Why are you looking toward heaven?” (Acts 1:11) It’s a question worth considering. Frequently, we are more concerned with heaven than with the Kingdom of God. The breathtaking sacrifice at Calvary purchased the forgiveness of sins and the hope of heaven, but in our generation many followers of Jesus have limited his work and message to the cross and heaven. We should ask: If the gospel is only about going to heaven, why did Jesus invite us to take up the yoke of discipleship?

A final note: We should be sure to add 10 days on to the 40 days of His resurrection. The gospel accounts end with Jesus saying, “Go!” In Acts, Jesus says, “Wait!”  What was so important that Jesus told his disciples to stay in Jerusalem? Simply this: There were 10 days of waiting, watching and praying before Something Big happened to the church. The idea of 10 days of waiting on the Holy Spirit is desperately needed in the church.

God’s kingdom is breaking in. The “age to come” is taking root in the here and now. It’s worth celebrating — and it’s worth reminding those we lead that the Grand Feast has already begun. The appetizers are being served, even now.

The time for fasting has ended. Let’s feast together in God’s Kingdom!
