Costco Apologizes for Labeling the Bible "Fiction"

A Costco store in Simi Valley, Calif., is feeling the wrath of local Christians after the store “mistakenly” labeled its supply of Bibles as “fiction.” The national warehouse chain issued an apology on behalf of the store, saying the labeling was a mistake and store associates were working to quickly correct the error.

A pastor of a local church in Simi Valley, Caleb Kaltenbach of Discovery Church, first noticed the labeling while shopping, but couldn’t find an employee to help him correct the error. So instead, he took a photo of the label and sent it to his congregation via Twitter.

“On the one hand Christians should not yell out ‘persecution’,” commented Kaltenbach. “We aren’t living in Iraq or Iran. But on the other hand, I believe that we do need to stand up for our faith and we need to be vocal about our concerns.”

“We deeply regret the mislabeling of the Bible and meant no offense to anyone,” the company wrote in an email. “The buyer has let us know that this was an error and the books are being pulled off the shelves to be re-marked.”

MyFoxDC.com received a statement from Costco that read, “Costco’s distributor mislabeled a small percentage of the Bibles, however we take responsibility and should have caught the mistake. We are correcting this with them for future distribution. In addition, we are immediately relabeling all mislabeled Bibles. We greatly apologize for this error.”
