Car Smashes Into Florida Church on Easter Sunday, 21 Injured

At least 21 people were injured on Easter Sunday at a church in Fort Myers, Florida when a Lexus sedan crashed into the building just before its annual Easter concert was about to start. The Second Haitian Baptist Church was crammed with 200 people at about 8:00 pm Sunday night when the car ripped through the wall and crashed into several pews holding 30 to 40 people each. At least three of the injured were children. More than 10 ambulances responded to the scene.

Local police said the driver of the car, a young woman, was attempting to park outside the building when her brakes allegedly failed. EMS was quoted as saying the pews were “obliterated.”

“Fellow parishioners used vehicle jacks and brute force to lift the vehicle in order to rescue several others trapped beneath the Lexus sedan while waiting for medics,” Fort Myers police said in a statement. “At this point, the investigation is being treated as a very unfortunate accident rather than a criminal act.”

None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, and EMS confirmed that the building is not in danger of collapsing.
