Film Planned Based on Bestselling Book "The Shack"

As reported by The Christian Post, a film based on the bestselling 2008 book The Shack is in the works. Reports say Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker may direct and appear in the film, as well as Oprah Winfrey and British star Idris Elba.

The Shack, written by William Paul Young, tells the story of a father who encounters God while grieving the kidnapping and subsequent murder of his young daughter. The meeting takes place in the broken-down shack where the child allegedly died, and the man meets three members of the Trinity—one an African American woman called “Papa” representing God the Father. The book, although it sold 18 million copies, sparked controversy among the Christian community for its unconventional theology and was even called “heretical” by R. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Budget is set at $30 million and Lionsgate will begin producing the film in Atlanta or Vancouver later this summer.
