Two Things Your Staff Needs From You

Whether you have a volunteer staff, or a large-full time staff, there are two things that every church staff member needs from their boss.

  1. Clear expectations. Most staffers want to make their boss happy, but they can’t do it if they don’t know the expectations.  This is why everyone should have a clear, written job description – without all the fluff.  You also need to clarify and write down things like office hours, how raises are handled, and how time off is approved.  Clarify your short term expectations as well.
  2. Honest evaluation. Trusting people to do a good job doesn’t mean leaving them alone to do whatever they want.  People need to know how they are doing and where they can improve.  This is why written, formal job evaluations, as well as informal on-the-job coaching is necessary.

For what it’s worth, I go into great detail into how this works at Oak Leaf Church in one of the six core nuts and bolts resources.  We also talk about hiring, firing, setting salaries, creating a staff culture, and meetings.  It comes with all kinds of docs and forms including our formal evaluation, job descriptions, hiring process, resignation agreement, and more.  Get this resource here or as a part of an entire GET ORGANIZED package.
