12 Steps To Becoming A Leadership Genius

Genius is making the complicated simple, not the simple complicated.  If you are like me, my default mode is to always have 7 Steps, 21 Lessons, or 10 Keys to do anything.  There has to be a formula, a method, a system that I can apply.  And if I can apply these techniques, sprinkled in with some love and people skills, then I think I can be successful. 

Is everything supposed to be that complicated, that complex?  I do not want to become so unbalanced that I do not prepare well but at the same time, isn’t leadership just as much art as it is science?  I think it is.

I am currently reading The Facebook Effect by David Kirkpatrick and came across the following quotes:

  1. “The trick isn’t adding stuff (to your webpage), it’s taking away.” – Mark Zuckerberg
  2. “Thefacebook was almost obsessively minimal…It was that pureness which drove it.” – Sam Lessin, classmate of Zuckerberg

“Obsessively Minimal” should become our goal and destination as leaders.  Have you noticed Google’s homepage or listened to Billy Graham preach? 

Results increase as complexity decreases.

So what are the best practices of an Obsessively Minimal leader?  What should I be doing?

  1. Practice quality self-leadership.  Make your character, integrity, and self-control a top priority.
  2. Focus is on serving the people you lead and improving their quality of life.
  3. Improve your skills daily.
  4. Don’t confuse activity with accomplishment.
  5. Celebrate
  6. Set the standard for commitment and hard work.  People do what people see.
  7. Inspire and give others hope.
  8. Read
  9. Prepare
  10. Build teams.
  11. Make your top three commitments Jesus Christ, family, and then your assignment – in that order.
  12. Stay committed to the vision.

Leaders, with all the information being thrown at you, paralysis can often set it.  Keep it simple.  Take these 12 steps daily and watch amazing things happen in your organization and in the lives of those you serve.
