A Thought on Criticism.

In order to get better at something, it is often necessary to walk through some fire. Sometimes it is a firestorm. What we do during and after such an experience is what has the potential to make us better at our craft. If excellence was easy, everyone would do it. We can respond 2 ways: 1) in humility or 2) in pride.

I want to talk specifically today about criticism and what it can do in our journey. Constructive criticism is something we should continually seek from our peers and mentors. In order to grow, it is necessary to have people in your life that will say, “That was good, but you can probably do much better”. Having people around you that care about your growth is one of the greatest tools we have. Be sure to check out Pastor Greg’s thoughts on criticism in Ir-Rev-Rend.

You may have people offer thoughts and opinions that hurt or discourage you. Those are the cards we are dealt with when interacting with people. And sometimes, people are actually trying to help, but it does more harm than good. So what do we do with such thoughts and concerns? Bring them to Lord. When things like that happen, I encourage you to remember 1 Peter 5:6-7, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you”. What a faithful promise from an amazing Father. Our job on earth is not to impress people, but to serve the Lord. So when people leave us disappointed or discouraged, refocus on the cross and allow His mercy and love to wash over you. The more we do that, the more we grow.

Have a great weekend and find someone to encourage!
