A Mary Moment

“Stone her” could’ve been the words Mary heard as she announced her big news from God.

Can you imagine being a teenage girl and realizing that you could be stoned to death because God wants to transform and rewrite human history through your life?

Marinate on the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary:

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. … The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.” Luke 1:30,35 (ESV)

Mary had a moment with God. God called Mary to an act of obedience that could’ve cost Mary her very life.

I call this moment, a “Mary Moment.”

As God calls you and me to join Him in transforming the world, He’s going to call us to accomplish something that can only be accomplished by Him working in and through us. This is a “Mary Moment.”

Our “Mary Moment” may be an act of financial generosity that costs us our security in money.

Our “Mary Moment” may be resurrecting an old, dead relationship with a family member.

Our “Mary Moment” may be going to see a counselor to get to the root of an addiction problem.

Whatever our “Mary Moment” is, may we respond like Mary:

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, … For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for He who is mighty has done great things for me.” Luke 1:46-49 (ESV).

Marinate on that,
