You Gotta Grow

I had the privilege of teaching at my friend Shawn Lovejoy’s conference called “Velocity 2012” a few weeks back.  I really appreciate Shawn’s heart.  I also gleaned some leadership nuggets of gold from Dr. Sam Chand’s main stage presentation, so I want to share some of his insights with you.  I added some of my flavor and marinade to it.   This helps me to integrate it into my own life.  Enjoy!
  1. Grow your character capacity.  When we immerse ourselves in Jesus and His Gospel, our character will be bent, molded, and shaped into His.  When we take care of our private life, Jesus will take care of our public life.
  1. Grow your identity capacity.  It’s so easy, whether a CEO, football coach, or stay-at-home dad, to find our identity in what we do, instead of what Jesus has done for us.  What happens when we can’t do what we love to do?  We die!  Here’s the Good News, what Jesus has done for us can never be destroyed!  He is our Life (Col. 3:4).
  1. Grow your pain capacity.  I loved when Dr. Sam said the following: “Leadership is bru-tiful. Leadership is beautiful and brutal.  Growth brings change and change brings pain. If you don’t bleed, you don’t lead.”
  1. Grow relationship capacity.  There are two types of people in your sphere of influence, those who make deposits in you and those who make withdrawals.
  1. Grow your exposure capacity.  The more you see and learn, the more you experience, and the more you grow your capacity.
  1. Grow your crisis capacity.  God uses every crisis to form Christ in us and to display Christ through us.  Some lessons in life can only be learned in the furnace of a crisis.
  1. Grow your risk capacity.   If the thing you’re attempting to accomplish doesn’t make you doubt, nor bring you to your knees in fear, then it’s way too small and it’s insulting to God.   Attempt things that are doomed to fail if Jesus doesn’t come to the rescue!
Marinate on that,

Pastor Derwin
