Matt Chandler, Part 1: How the 2022 Controversy Has Impacted His Life and Ministry

“Before I was restored, we had an elder retreat in October, and man if the Holy Spirit didn’t show up and do some things among us…it was just a profound time of healing.”

“There was a momentum born in that October retreat that feels to me like it’s still moving forward.”

“You preach grace and the mercy of Christ to this group of people for two decades and then they give it back to you, and I think that was the thing that was so powerful in our shared experience of this, is they were happy to extend grace to me.”

“We’re baptizing more than we ever have, like really cool Jesus stuff is happening everywhere. I couldn’t be more grateful.”

“I have the type of elders that can be trusted, and that’s huge. And if you’ve built your elder board around business guys who have a lot of money or the popular men in the church…if you do it that way, then on the day where you need to be defended, you need someone to come shield to shield next to you, or you need to be corrected, there will be things that I would maybe say, ‘I don’t think you should submit to that.’”

“In all of it, I never thought, ‘These guys are trying to get rid of me.’”

“I think the last three months have been some of the more fun times in ministry I’ve ever had. And I’ve had some epically good times.”

“I come from a hot mess, and so I just had this real hope in my heart after I became a Christian that the things that have haunted the Chandler bloodline for 500 years could go in the ground with me.”
