“A thought can sometimes be redirected. But when you’ve been trying to redirect it for a week, a month, a year, and it’s not really moving, that’s probably a signal that there’s more to it, and there’s probably something deeper that you’ve got to look at.”

“Scientifically, the only way the brain heals from trauma—it does not heal by fixing something. It does not heal by pulling someone out of a difficult situation and putting them in a good one. It does not heal with money or resources. It heals when you go back to that difficult thing and you aren’t alone and someone is with you in it and you feel sad together.”

“Because of the church, we have demonized emotions and we’ve suppressed them. We’re missing out, I think, on a deeper connection with God and a deeper connection with each other.”
