Amazing and Often Overlooked Small Group Books

When I arrived at NavPress to be the small groups guy one of the first things I did was to dive into her stockpile of small group books to see if there were any good ones. I was blindsided when I found out that some of the most practical small group books that I had read were published by NavPress. I also realized that there were other fantastic books on small groups in the NavPress library that simply hadn’t shown up on my radar screen.

Check out these very practical and transformational titles.

How to Lead Small Groups by Neal F. McBride
How to Ask Great Questions by Karen Lee-Thorp
201 Great Questions by Jerry D. Jones
101 Ways to Help People in Need by Steve and Janie Sjogren
Helping Those Who Hurt by Barbara M. Roberts

Many of these very impressive books climb right into the world where small group leaders live. For instance, if a small group leader is going to need to know how to minister to group members in varying desperate situations Helping Those Who Hurt is one they need in their hands. It tells the small group leader specifically how to minister to group members during a time of illness and how to do hospital visitation, what to do when a group member is going through crisis (even how to recognize and respond when someone discloses abuse), how to minister to those who are dealing with death, divorce, addiction, and domestic violence. And if you want your groups to be missional, it would be very helpful if the small group leader had a copy of 101 Ways to Reach Your Community by Steve Sjogren. In it they’ll find 101 very practical ideas for being Jesus to the community. These are just two of many great books for small group leaders.

It would be wise to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each small group leader and give he or she copies of the books that will help them become more effective leaders.
