Ransom: The Ultimate Bondage Breaker

Ransom: Defined 1. deliverance or rescue from punishment. 2. to be redeemed from captivity, bondage, or rescue by paying a demanded price.

Insight

Since biblical days, people have taken and sold slaves. After a war, whoever remained alive after the carnage would often be taken as a slave to serve the victors. It must have been a terrifying experience. Can you imagine! Although slavery still exists today, most of us have never endured the horrifying experience. Scripture speaks not only of physical captivity, but also captivity of the heart and soul.

Romans 8 explains further, “For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.”

Jesus’ work on the cross was the ultimate bondage breaker. He paid the price of our ransom and took us out of the slave trade. Often, we take this familiar concept for granted. Remembering this most significant event is imperative to worship and springs from a grateful heart!

Either sin is with you, lying on your shoulders, or it is lying on Christ, the Lamb of God. -Martin Luther
