The Importance of Non-Profit Transparency

“Truth is like an air bubble in a cup of water. Sooner or later, it will always come to surface.”

This is a quote from one of my mentors earlier in life who drilled into me the importance of integrity and transparency in life and work. It has definitely saved me a ton of heartache over the years.

Leading an organization or business is not easy. Beyond strategy, the increase in influence and authority often attracts opportunities to take less-than-moral choices for personal or corporate benefit. I’m not going to lie….it’s never easy. Without a clear grasp of what you and your organization/company is about, it will be almost impossible not to waiver. It doesn’t matter if you’re running a multi-million dollar company or a multi-hundred dollar organization, leading without integrity will ultimately catch up with you.

A good friend recently sent me the following 60 minutes story of a well known non-profit leader, Greg Mortenson, who is known for his work in Afghanistan. It appears that serious questions have risen in regards to his work. Initially, I thought it was an attack on an organization doing good, but soon realized that caring people that actually respect Greg’s work are calling things into question.

Regardless of what actually happened, I think this video is a great reminder of our need to stay transparent and work towards leading with integrity.
