58: A New Film Release About Poverty & Faith

During a recent post, I introduced you to a new initiative within the global Christian faith community called 58. This is a movement dedicated to mobilizing the Church to end extreme poverty around the world. Inspired by Isaiah 58 (a passage in the Bible that calls the people of God to engage a true fast by participating in poverty-eradicating action), these are individuals and groups that are not satisfied with simply talking about how bad poverty is around the world. But rather, they are choosing to re-posture their lives to make a last difference.

A NEW FILM RELEASE

On October 13th, 58 will be premiering its new film (see trailer below) on this topic in 50 theatres/venues around the United States. In addition, they have created complimentary screening kits for groups interested in hosting the film in their respective areas after the premiere date.

For those interested in viewing this film on the release date at a theatre, 58 has generously created a unique access code for readers of this blog.

  • Go to www.furstaccess.com.
  • Create a free account.
  • Search for local screening of the film.
  • Request # of tickets.
  • Enter code “CHARLESLEE” to reserve your seats.

I recently had the opportunity to preview this film in its entirety. 58: The Film is definitely worth viewing. I appreciated how it highlighted both the reality of extreme poverty around the world as well as the growing hope that exists in the midst of such human suffering. Regardless of one’s faith, this film expresses the need for human dignity, compassion, and justice. My favorite quote in the film comes from Wes Stafford, President of Compassion International, when he stated,

“For those of us who are followers of Christ, we simply don’t have the option, when it comes to the poor, of doing nothing.”

Here is the trailer for 58: The Film:

58: is the collaborative work of several proven organizations partnering together in this anti-poverty work including: Compassion International, International Justice Mission, ECHO, Living Water International, Micah Challenge, World Relief, HOPE International, Plant with Purpose, Food for the Hungry, and CRWRC.
