How Personal is God's Providence?

“God’s Activity in the World.” ~Divine Providence
Big Idea for Matthew 2:1-23 is that God goes to extreme measures to have the Messiah Jesus worshipped by all the peoples of the earth.  This causes positive and negative reactions from those involved.  His providence is on display.
In these verses, there is a distinct theological focus.  It shows that the Messiah was born in Bethlehem as predicted by the prophets.  The Jews were provoked with hostility, but won Gentile acceptance and worship (i.e. The Magi).  Matthew is not writing down meaningless events, but the fulfillment of Scripture.  He wanted the readers to see the supernatural and providential care for the virgin-born Son, Jesus, to anticipate the hostile, resentment and suffering he would face toward the Cross.  He also hints at the fact that the Gentiles would be part of the ultimate Kingdom Reign of Christ.
Matthew wants us to see a few principles about Christ and worship:
First, Jesus is the Messiah, the King of the Jews, and is Worthy of Worship.  It was prophesied.  It was fulfilled.  He is the Messiah – King to end all Kings.
Second, Jesus is to be worshiped not just by Jews, but also by all the nations of the world, as represented by the Gentile Magi.  They were among the first to worship Jesus.
Third, God goes to extreme measures in moving the universe to make his Son, Jesus known and worshiped. This is God’s Goal – that his Son would be known and worshiped.
Fourth, Jesus brings out mixed feelings in different people.  Some long to Worship and others long to oppose because of their sin.
Fifth, Worshiping Jesus means joyfully ascribing worth to Christ with sacrificial gifts.  The Magi brought gifts with a heart of worship.
