37% of Unchurched were Hurt by the Church

According to a report by The Barna Group, more than four out of five non-churchgoing Americans were formerly regular church participants, but 37% of them avoid church because of negative past experiences with churches or church people. 28% of U.S. adults have not attended any church services or activities in the last six months. Barna’s report shows differing demographics than assumed of the unchurched; he shows that unchurched women outnumber unchurched men and that unchurched Boomers and elders outnumber the younger generations. Unchurched whites outnumber unchurched minorities by nearly three to one.
