The press release cited “state-sponsored forced labor in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where the Chinese government is engaged in systemic human rights abuses against the Uyghur people and other ethnic and religious minorities.”

On Tuesday, a group of activists sent an open letter calling on the United Nations Human Rights Council to conduct an investigation in the XUAR and to end the Uyghur genocide being committed there. The letter says the CCP’s actions constitute “crimes against humanity” and “meet the threshold of acts constitutive of genocide, core international crimes under the Genocide Convention, which prohibits ‘imposing measures intended to prevent births’ among an ethnic or religious group.’”

Notably, Disney recently drew criticism after the release of its live-action version of the film “Mulan.” Viewers noticed that in the credits, the company thanked authorities in the XUAR, where part of the movie was filmed. The movie’s star, Liu Yifei, has also been criticized for publicly declaring her support for Hong Kong police.
